What is required before I can obtain my license plates?

You will need the following basic items (some transactions may require additional information): 

1. Your vehicle must be physically located in Colorado.
2. A physical address is required for the legal address.  A post office box or mail stop can be used for the mailing address only.
3. Title (or a Title Complete Notice)
4. Secure and Verifiable Identification
• If this vehicle is owned by a business you will need to bring a Letter of Authorization. 

• When a vehicle is being titled in the name of a company, the individual shall present a letter of authorization to act on behalf of the company. The letter shall be on the company’s letterhead and signed by an authority of the company or a statement signed under penalty of perjury or notarized. Secure and verifiable identification is required from the individual receiving the title. If the agent is the sole owner of the company, a Statement of Fact, stating that they are the sole owner of the company is required. 

5. Proof of Colorado Insurance (we are not able to accept out of state insurance since different states' requirements for insurance minimums may not meet guidelines in Colorado's law)  

How does the "plating" process work? 

• Bring the information listed above to any of our motor vehicle locations.
• You need to get your license plates within 60 days of your date of purchase or late fees may be required.
• If you have a loan, we will process the loan and the title work first.  We will send you a plain white postcard (called a Title Complete  Notice) that lets you know you can come in and get your license plates.
•  If you are unable to visit our office and would like to obtain your plates by mail.  We can help.
